MILETUS

Is an ancient Greek city, lying near the mouth of the Meander River. It is the birthplace of mathematician Thales and the two famous philosophers, Anaxagoras and Anaximander. Miletus was also one of the oldest and the most important Greek cities of Ionia, boasting four harbors. Miletus was rebuilt on a gridiron plan that was designed by the Milesian Hippodamus; this became the Greek and Roman standard for urban planning.
